How iTunes Match works with iCloud

How iTunes Match works

iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. The match is a three step process involving analyzing your library, matching songs, and uploading non-matched songs. It does this for your whole library. One drawback here is that you cannot choose to exclude songs. If you don't want songs to be included you will have to take them out of your library.

iTunes Match: Matched Songs

Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Chances are that all of your songs are already there on the iCloud since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store. And for the few songs that aren't, iTunes has to upload only what it can't match which is much faster than starting from scratch.

Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it to any of your devices. Matched songs from the iClloud are downloaded at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality. The cool thing here is that this applies even if your original copy was of lower quality. Even better is that you can get the higher quality song to be replaced in your library.

What you need to do is to remove it from your local library. After delete since the song entry stays in iTunes a little cloud now shows up in a newly added column that shows you that you have a song that is in the cloud but not in your library. You can click on the cloud and it will download it to your local library, where again it is now permanently yours at the higher bit rate.

iTunes Match: Unmatched Songs

The songs that are not match by iTunes Match are copied in their current format and bit rate up to 320K. Songs encoded as MP3 or AAC will be uploaded as is. These songs will be made available for download in the same format it was uploaded in. Songs encoded in ALAC, WAV, or AIFF will be transcoded to a separate temporary AAC 256 kbps file locally, prior to uploading to iCloud. The original files will remain untouched. Song files over 200 MB will not be uploaded to iCloud.

Songs containing DRM (Digital Rights Management) will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud unless your computer is authorized for playback of that content. Songs purchased outside of the United States iTunes Store containing DRM will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud. Songs encoded as AAC or MP3 with a bitrate lower than 96 kbps will not be matched or uploaded to iCloud.

Other iTunes Match Features

iTunes Match uses your songs meta-data. If you have made lots of custom edits to your song files, iTunes copies exactly that to the cloud. Even if you replace your songs with the upgraded versions iTunes Match retains the previous meta-data that you created.
iTunes runs match on any new material that is added. i.e. when you rip a new album it is matched or copied to the cloud depending on how the match worked. Also, when you change meta-data, it immediately moves that meta-data to the cloud.

How to subscribe to iTunes Match

iTunes Match is a $24.99 per year service providing full access to all your music up to 25,000 tracks from any of the devices. Your subscription will automatically renew at the end of your subscription. iTunes Store purchases made with the same Apple ID being used for iTunes Match do not count towards the 25,000 song limit.

Launch iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your computer. You cannot subscribe to iTunes Match from an iOS device.
Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
From the main screen, click "Subscribe for $24.99."
If you already have an existing Apple ID that you use for iTunes Store ourchases, sign in with that Apple ID and click Subscribe.
Once you agree to the iTunes Match Terms and Conditions, iTunes will automatically scan your iTunes library for matches.
A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume iTunes at any time by clicking the Stop or Start button.
Once iTunes has completed scanning, matching, and uploading any unmatched songs, click Done.

iTunes Match: How to add a computer or iOS device

Adding computer to iTunes Match

Download an install iTunes 10.5.1 or later on the computer you intend to add iTunes Match. Follow the link to the latest version of iTunes here.
Sign in with the Apple ID you want to use with iTunes Match.
Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match.
Click "iTunes Match" on the left side of iTunes.
Click the Add This Computer button.
When prompted, enter your Apple ID password.
iTunes will automatically begin scanning your computer's library for matches.
A status indicator will allow you to track progress. You may also manually pause and resume the process at anytime by clicking the Stop or Start button.
Once iTunes has completed matching and uploading your iTunes library, your music in iCloud will be integrated into your local music library. A download button will appear to the right of content that you have in iCloud that doesn't already exist on your computer.

Adding iOS device to iTunes Match

On your iOS device with iOS 5.0.1 or later, go to Settings > Music. Follow the link the latest iOS software here.
Tap the iTunes Match switch to On.
Open the Music Player app on your device to access your music in iCloud
Your music in iCloud will be integrated into your local music library. A download button with cloud icon will appear to the right of content that you have in iCloud that doesn't already exist on your device.

iTunes Match Setup Tips:

Syncing music with iTunes will be disabled while iTunes Match is enabled on your iOS device.
When enabling iTunes Match on your iOS device, the music library on your iOS device will be deleted and then replaced with your music in iCloud.
By default, downloading over a cellular network is disabled. To download using cellular data, you must manually enable downloads using cellular data.

iTunes Match: How to delete songs from iCloud

Open iTunes 10.5.1 or later on your computer that has iTunes Match enabled
Click Music on the left side of iTunes.
Select the item you would like to delete. Right-click the item and then choose Delete.
You will be asked to confirm the delete.
If the item you want to delete exists in iTunes on your computer as well as in iCloud, click the checkbox to also delete the item from iCloud.

iTunes Match: iCloud delete tips:

When deleting an item from iCloud, the deleted item will also be deleted from any iPod, iPhone, or iPad enabled for iTunes Match which syncs with your iTunes library.
Deleting from iCloud can only be done from a computer that is enabled for iTunes Match. When you delete an item from iCloud, the item cannot be recovered.

GarageBand music app adds iPod Touch support

Apple has released an update to its highly popular GarageBand music creation app with support for iPod touch and iPhone. iOS 4.3.2 released with FaceTime, 3G connectivity fixes

Apple today released iOS 4.3.2 for the fourth-generation iPod touch, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM), iPad and iPad 2. This release addresses issues with frozen screens during FaceTime calls and issues that prevented international users from connecting to 3G networks on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G.

According to Apple's release notes, the update also includes the latest security updates. Note that the update does not apply to the CDMA-based Verizon iPhone 4, which has been given its own unique software update, iOS 4.2.7. Both updates are available now via the Update feature in iTunes.

Apple drops iPod prices in Australia

Apple has drops prices for all the iPods in Australia. The iPod touch has seen a A$30 price decrease on the 8GB model, a A$29 decrease on 32GB units, and a A$50 decrease on the 64GB model, bringing the prices to A$259, A$349, and A$449, respectively.

The iPod shuffle is now A$65 with a A$4. The 8GB iPod nano is now A$179 with a drop of A$20 while the 16GB model has seen a $10 price reduction, to $219.

Making the actual FaceTime video call is as simple as it gets:
1. Just tap the FaceTime app.
2. Find the person you want to call.
  - When calling someone using an iPhone 4 or later: Try the phone number of the person you are calling first. If the person has registered an email with FaceTime, you can use that as well.
  - When calling someone using an iPad 2, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac: Use the email address designated for FaceTime of the person you are calling.
  NOTE: On iPad 2, iPod touch, and FaceTime for Mac, you need to add a person as a contact using the FaceTime or Contacts app before you can call them.
3. An invitation pops up on their iPod touch or iPhone 4 screen asking if they want to join.
4. When they accept, FaceTime begins.
Receiving a FaceTime Video Call:
1. If somebody wants to start a video call with you, you'll receive an invitation - along with a vibrating alert - on your iPod touch asking you to join.
2. Simply tap Accept, and the video call begins.

Troubleshooting FaceTime problem

If FaceTime call is not working then first try making a FaceTime call to Apple's FaceTime testing number at 1-888-FACETIME (1-888-322-3846). By doing this you can find out if the problem is with receiving calls or making the calls.

Issue 1: Unable to activate or make FaceTime calls

Try turning FaceTime off and on again using the following:

iOS: Settings > Phone
FaceTime for Mac: FaceTime > Preferences

Issue 2: Can't place a FaceTime call to a particular contact
Try the following:

Verify that you have the correct phone number or email address.
Use the correct method of contacting the person. If you are calling:
- An iPhone 4 user: Use the phone number
- An iPad 2, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac user: Use the email address

Also check the following:

Check that each person has an active Wi-Fi connection.
- If you are using router, firewall, or security software that restricts Internet access, verify that port forwarding is enabled. Make sure that the router supports UPNP and that the Universal Plug-and-Play (UPNP) feature is not turned OFF.
Verify that the date and time are set correctly on your iOS device or Mac.
The Apple ID you are using to register FaceTime on iPad 2, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac must be an email address.

Today more reports (rumors) cropped up about the rumored next generation (4G) iPod Touch featuring a Camera. If you recall in May there were a few pictures reportedly of the next generation iPod Touch with the camera. The 1st report is a picture of a presentation slide from John Lewis, one of Britain's biggest retailers. In the slide it is mentioned that the new iPod Touch will feature a 5 megapixel camera that can capture HD video (presumably at 720p just like iPhone 4). Also the more exciting news is that the the new iPod Touch will feature Apple's new FaceTime video chat over Wi-Fi. What this means is the iPod Touch will have a front-facing camera too.

Pairing Bluetooth headphones or car kit with iPod touch

You need to first make the bluetooth stereo headphone discoverable by other devices. To do this just follow the instructions that came with the headphones to make them discoverable.
Then on your iPod Touch go to Settings, choose General > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth ON.
Select the headphones from the list of Devices that is displayed and, if prompted, enter the passkey or PIN number. See the instructions about the passkey or PIN that came with your headphones.

After these steps of pairing the headphones with iPod touch, the headphone product name and a Bluetooth audio icon appear on the iPod touch status bar at the top of the screen when you are viewing audio or video playback controls. Tap to switch to a different audio output, such as the internal speaker.

The Bluetooth icon appears blue or white, if the bluetooth is on and a device is connected to iPod touch. Note that the color depends on the current color of the status bar. If the Bluetooth icon is gray in color it means that Bluetooth is on but no device is connected. If you’ve paired a device with iPod touch, it may be out of range or turned off. if there is no Bluetooth icon it means that the bluetooth is turned OFF.

Un-pairing or removing a Bluetooth headphones or car kit from iPod touch

If you’ve paired iPod touch with one Bluetooth device and want to use another device instead, you must unpair the first device.

Unable to find nearby Bluetooth devices

If a pairing record already exists, the device does not appear as discoverable. Try to connect the device using that pairing record, or delete the record and pair again.
Ensure that the firmware or software on the Bluetooth device is up to date.
Ensure that the Bluetooth device is charged or connected to power.
Verify that the Bluetooth device is using a profile that works with the iPhone or iPod touch, such as Headset, Handsfree, or A2DP.
Turn off both the iPhone or iPod touch and the Bluetooth device, then turn both devices on again.
If the issue persists, test Bluetooth with another device or consult the manufacturer's documentation.

Unable to pair with Bluetooth device

Ensure that the Bluetooth device is in range. Most devices have a range of approximately 30 feet.

Next generation iPod Touch with Camera??

A Vietnamese website called Tinhte has published pictures and video of what looks like a next generation iPod touch with camera. This is the same website that leaked the pictures of the fourth-generation iPhone. The iPod touch in the picture and the video looks like a prototype running on some kind of a hardware testing software. It has exactly the same physical dimensions and design as the second-generation and third-generation iPod touch. Read more....

Mac Rumors notes that the prototype does not appear to be a particularly new creation, as its serial number indicates that it was manufactured in June 2009. Also the "N18" codename found on a sticker on the back of the device indicated that the unit is indeed a third-generation iPod touch prototype, and not representative of an upcoming revision to the product. If you recall similar 2 iPod Touch prototypes with camera had showed up on ebay recently.

2 iPod Touch with camera found on ebay

Just days after Gizmodo reported of iPhone 4G prototypes, now 9to5mac is reporting that it has spotted 2 iPod Touch with cameras up for auction on eBay. This auction has since then been pulled off.

The iPod Touches are designated DVT-1 and DVT-2 and are thought to be units produced for testing by Apple's development team. "DVT" stands for "design verification test", an Apple production milestone.

One iPod touch was apparently completely non-functional while the other booted and revealed a partially complete SwitchBoard OS.

Apple today released iTunes version 9.1 just days before the April 3rd iPad launch. As expected this iTunes release includes full support for the iPad syncing, iBooks and also has some other feature enhancements.

Users will be able to organize and sync books downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes library and also sync your computer's music, movies and other media with your tablet device.

In the updated iTunes, users will have more control over Genius Mixes, including the ability to rename mixes and rearrange them by dragging. On-The-Go playlist is a feature on your iPod Touch that lets you set up playlists on the iPod itself without having to use the iTunes.

Add songs to On-The-Go playlists

First go to your music, and tap Playlists, then On-The-Go, which appears near the top of the list. Browse for songs using the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Tap any song or video to add it to the playlist. Tap Add All Songs at the top of any list of songs to add all the songs in the list. If you select an artist, composer, or album, you can choose Add All Songs at the top of that item's list, and if you select a genre, you can choose Add All Albums. Read more...

Edit On-The-Go playlists

To edit the playlist, tap Playlists, tap On-The-Go, tap Edit, then do one of the following:

To move a song higher or lower in the list, drag the rearrange icon next to the song.
To delete a song from the playlist, tap the red minus sign icon next to a song, then tap Delete. Deleting a song from the on-the-go playlist doesn't delete it from iPhone.
To clear the entire playlist, tap Clear Playlist.
To add more songs, tap the plus sign icon.

Sync On-The-Go playlists to iTunes

If you sync your iPod automatically, iTunes will copy the On-The-Go playlist, naming it On-The-Go 1, On-The-Go 2, and so on. The playlist on the iPod Touch itself is deleted. To put a playlist back on iPod Touch, select iPod Touch in the iTunes sidebar, click the Music tab, and set the playlist to sync. iPod Touch sets record on Christmas day

Research firm Flurry Analytics has revealed in its report that App Store had a major spike in downloads from the iPod Touch on Christmas day. In fact the iPod Touch Applications downloads jumped 1000%. This indicates that there was a significant surge in the iPod touch sales over this holiday season.

Also the iPod Touch downloads for the first time surpassed iPhone downloads beating it by 172% on Christmas day. iPod touch download volumes continued to exceed that of the iPhone by 104% on December 26. Overall, App Store download growth increased by over 50% in December as compared to November.

Here are some stats:

App downloads on iPod Touch soared past iPhone for the first time, eclipsing iPhone downloads by 172%.
iPod Touch 3G downloads increased by more than 900% on Christmas Day, compared to the average of all previous Fridays in December.
Total iPod Touch downloads (all generations) jumped by over 1000% on Christmas Day, indicating that in addition to new iPod Touch 3Gs coming into the market, iTunes gift card giving may have driven downloads to older generation iPod Touch devices.

iTunes & Live Nation bring live music concerts

Apple has setup a partnership with Live Nation, a concert promoter to launch a new live music program that offers exclusive recorded and filmed concerts.

The Live Nation Studios division records concerts in more than 80 venues that have been dubbed "next-generation wired live recording studios". Annually Live Nation produces over 22,000 concerts for 1,600 artists in 33 countries. During 2008, the company sold over 50 million concert tickets and has had over 70 million unique visitors to LiveNation.com.

As part of this tie-up Live Nation will offer its live recordings and filmed concerts from its network of "wired" venues for purchase and download only on iTunes. The artists who feature in these recordings include Jesse McCartney, Saving Abel, OK Go, A Fine Frenzy, Duffy, Ziggy Marley, Plain White T's and many more. Head to iTunes and check it out.

Apple announces Black Friday sales event

Apple has posted a web page announcing a one day sales event on "Black Friday", the day after the Thanksgiving. As you can see on the image, Apple has all its products including the iPod Touch as gift ideas. Discounts and Pricing details are yet to be know or made available but there was a leaked screen shot from BGR that we posted few days back where it was speculated that all iPods (excluding iPod Shuffle) will carry up to 30% discount.
The web page says "Come back to the Apple Online Store the day after Thanksgiving for a special one-day-only holiday shopping event. You'll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone, and Mac gift ideas - all with free shipping."
In a similar event last year Apple had discounts on all of its iPod models including a $21 discount on iPod Touch. Hope to see more discounts this year given the current state of the economy.

Macworld tested the new iPod Touch 3rd gen against the 2G to test Apple's claim of it being 50% faster than its predecessor and the results proved what Apple has touted. Macworld found that although the speed results vary from task to task overall it was faster across the board. Booting was dramatically faster, as was launching applications and Internet browsing.

Macworld also notes that 'Just as the iPhone 3GS was faster than the iPhone 3G at everything, the new iPod touch feels much faster at any task you throw at it: applications launch (and quit) faster, Web pages load more quickly, processor-intensive games and programs perform better-you name it.'

Surprisingly the most anticipated feature of a built-in camera is missing from the new iPod Touch. Off late there have been many reports suggesting that Apple had hardware issues with the camera and hence the capability had to be scrapped.

During the presentation Apple also pushed the iPod touch as a "pocket computer� with the device's ability to surf the Web, check e-mail, manage calendars, organize contacts, and access popular Web sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Apple also has updated the other iPod touch models by lowering the price of the entry model and increasing storage and speed in the two more expensive models. The price of the 8GB model has dropped from $229 to $199. This is the first time that the iPod touch has broken the $200 barrier.

iPod touch explosion incident cover up

According to a report in The Times, the father and daughter who were involved in the iPod Touch explosion incident have come out now saying that Apple attempted to silence them by offering them a refund only on the condition that they would not go public about the matter.

Ken Stanborough from Liverpool UK, dropped his daughter Ellie's iPod touch last month, after which it immediately "made a hissing noise" and he added that he "could feel it getting hotter in my hand, and I thought I could see vapour". Stanborough then quickly threw the iPod touch outside and "within 30 seconds there was a pop, a big puff of smoke and it went 10ft in the air".

After complaining to Argos and Apple, Mr Stanborough received a letter from Apple requesting that he "agree that you will keep the terms and existence of this settlement agreement completely confidential", and that any breach of confidentiality "may result in Apple seeking injunctive relief, damages and legal costs against the defaulting persons or parties". The first thing before transferring your iPod or iPhone contents to the computer is to authorize your computer. This needs to be done even before connecting your iPod or iPhone to the computer.

Open iTunes and from the Store menu chose "Authorize Computer".
A dialog box will appear in which the Apple ID button is select by default. If you have an AOL account select AOL.
Enter your Apple ID or AOL screen name and password, then click the Authorize button.

NOTE: If you purchased from the iTunes Store using multiple accounts then you will need to authorize the computer for each one.

Now foolow these steps to transfer iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer:

First connect your iPod or iPhone to the computer.
If your iPod is synced with another iTunes library, the following dialog may appear.
Click the Transfer Purchases button. iTunes will begin copying any purchases made with any account that the computer is authorized for.
If you are not prompted by the dialog above, it could be that the option "Do not ask me again" was previously selected. Then you can do one of the following:

After connecting your iPod or iPhone to the computer and its icon appears in iTunes, you can choose Transfer Purchases from iPod from the File menu.

OR
You can right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac only) your iPod in the iTunes Source list, then choose Transfer Purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

Note that these steps will only help you restore content that you purchased from the iTunes store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your iPod or iPhone to the iTunes library.

Following Michael Jackson's unfortunate sudden death at the age of 50 on Thursday, Apple has inadvertently found itself profiting from this through the iTunes Store. It is being reported that a staggering nine out of ten top albums came from the 'King of Pop'.

Also six out of the top ten songs being purchased on the US store belonged to the legendary singer. About 19 of the top 25 music videos were either for Jackson specifically or else one of his collaborative projects, such as the "We Are the World" charity song.

No previous artist, living or dead, has achieved that level of popularity on the music service since it opened in 2003.

Boingo says that there is heavy access from iPhones and iPod touches with the combination representing nearly a quarter of all access, at 23 percent. The figure puts Apple handhelds ahead of both Mac- and Windows Vista-based computers, and second only to Windows XP systems.

Between May 2008 and May 2009, unique iPhone visitors rose 380 percent, landing the iPhone in first place in terms of fastest growth -- Nokia's E-series smartphones ranked second, at 372 percent. Apple on Monday has released iTunes version 8.2. What is interesting about this release it that this iTunes version supports iPhone or iPod touch handhelds loaded with iPhone 3.0 Software Update. The iPhone OS version 3.0 is expected to release in the coming weeks. There is also the maintenance update for QuickTime 7.6 to go along with the iTunes.

iTunes 8.2 is available for download from Apple site or via Software Update. This new version of iTunes also includes several accessibility improvements and bug fixes, according to a brief set of release notes.

If you recall registered iPhone developers already have had access to iTunes 8.2 since late April when Apple released a new beta of iPhone Software 3.0 that was incompatible with the then current iTunes 8.1 release.

That's right! You read is correctly. Apple has made this revelation in a new support page posted on its website. According to Apple, when using headphones in areas where the air is very dry, it is easy to build up static electricity and possible for your ear to receive a small electrostatic discharge (in other words shock) from the headphones while listening to iPod or iPhone. Apple today reported its 2nd Quarter financial results with the news that it sold 11.01 million iPods during the quarter which is a 3 percent increase compared to the quarter a year ago. This is despite Apple’s introduction of the third-generation iPod shuffle during the quarter.

The Pentagon is funding the technology behind an app that would allow a soldier to take a picture of a street sign and quickly receive intelligence on the local area, while the U.S. Marine Corps is funding an application that would allow soldiers to upload photos of detained suspects to a centralized, biometric database, which could then be used to match faces and make it easier to track suspects once they’ve been released.

More advanced plans include the ability to send or receive extremely sensitive communications, such as video from unmanned drones, or calls from spies in foreign countries. The US Army is in the process of developing a remote control app for bomb disposal robots, exploiting Apple's motion-sensing technology.

Like the original game, the iPhone and the iPod touch version mixes aspects of stealth with action, combat and some minor puzzle-solving. The game also features skill-based mini-games, cinematic cutscenes, the ability to upgrade Altair and his six different weapons, and 3D graphics.

New to the iPhone are a collection of mini-games, touch-based controls, and a scaled-down 3D engine which operates primarily from an isometric perspective. The game is expected to premiere on the App Store sometime next week. The pricing is yet to be announced.

iTunes song prices see more hike than reduction

As announced previously Apple has changed the prices of the iTunes songs. As per this new pricing scheme the songs will now fall into one of three pricing tiers 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 -- with many more songs priced at 69 cents than $1.29.

Many songs were to remain priced at 99 cents while some older and less popular tracks were expected to fall to 69 cents. It is being reported that as of Tuesday morning, those cheaper songs were few and far between. Instead, Apple appears to have made price increases its first priority. As of press time, the pricing changes have resulted in half of the top ten and 29 of the top 100 overall song downloads increasing in price to $1.29.

According to the company’s Mobile blog, the team behind the apps has completely re-architected the code to offer more consistent performance, and refreshed the user interface to make it easier to perform batch actions, along with laying the groundwork for future improvements.

If the network connection dies down, you will still be able to open recently read messages and compose new emails over a “flaky, or non-existent, network connection.” Other improvements include easier to read labels that are more in-line with their desktop counterparts and a relocated search menu.

This new Gmail for mobile requires iPhone/iPod Touch OS 2.2.1 or above and can be accessed now by visiting gmail.com from an iPhone or iPod touch. It is currently only available in English only. If you have an older firmware version, you'll be directed to the previous Gmail for mobile. All Android-powered phones are supported.

Apple releases iTunes 8.1.1 with support for HD movie rental

Camera coming to iPod touch?

A new job opening posted by Apple suggests the company is planning to add a camera module to future iPod models, possibly including the iPod touch. The iPhone Engineering Group "is looking for a Camera Engineering Project Manager (EPM) to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod."

The listing provides some credence to recent rumors that photo and possibly video capabilities will soon make their way to the iPod touch. Recent reports have also indicated that the next iPhone will see its camera upgraded from 2.0 megapixels to 3.2 megapixels while also gaining video recording capabilities.

iTunes tracks price hike from April 7

Citing music industry executives, the LA Times reports that while the date has yet to be officially announced by Apple, the company has been informing record labels that the change will go into effect on that date.

Apple announced in January that it would be moving to a pricing model where tracks sold for either $0.69, $0.99, or $1.29, based on the wholesale cost set by the labels; in return, Apple was able to secure DRM-free music from all three remaining holdout labels.

Many mainstream hits, including both new and old songs, will be raised in price from 99 cents to $1.29. As previously announced, a number of older tracks should simultaneously be reduced in cost to 69 cents, in a bid to encourage back-catalog sales. The changes are generally acknowledged to be a result of pressure from major labels, which have been unhappy with digital sales as CD-based distribution continues to decline.

However, despite the DRM-free nature of the more expensive downloads, some music industry insiders are criticizing the move, particularly in the current economic climate.
