iPod Touch Wi-Fi Settings: How to connect & manage iPod Touch Wi-Fi network

Friday, January 30, 2009  |  183 comments
Manage iPod Touch Wi-Fi networks
iPod touch automatically locates wireless hotspots (WiFi), including protected networks within a given nearby range. If it's a secure network--the networks are listed with a padlock icon--the touch will prompt you for a password. This will be one of the keys listed on your router's wireless configuration pages.

Once connected, verify that everything's working by using Safari to surf the Web. You can use the iPod touch WiFi to connect to the Internet using Safari web browser, YouTube, or iTunes WiFi Music Store.
Show me more...

How does the iPod Touch connect to the WiFi

When you use the Safari, YouTube or the iTunes WiFi Music Store, the iPod touch automatically does the following in order until it is connected:
  1. If you had previously connected, your iPod Touch automatically connects to the last WiFi network you used.
  2. If this is the first time you are connecting or if the previously used WiFi networks are not available, the iPod touch will scan for WiFi networks and show a list of networks in the range. Tap a network to join or connect to it. If the network shows a lock icon next to it then you need to provide a password to connect.
  3. If the WiFi network is configured not to broadcast or be displayed to the public an option to manually enter your WiFi network name/SSID is shown. If necessary, enter the password to join.

When iPod touch is connected to a WiFi network, the WiFi icon in the status bar at the top of the screen shows connection strength. The more bars you see, the stronger the connection.

How to change the iPod Touch Wi-Fi settings

To Turn iPod Touch WiFi ON or OFF

Choose Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi ON or OFF.

Set iPod touch to ask if you want to join a new WiFi network

When you are trying to access the Internet, by using Safari or YouTube for example, and you are not in range of a WiFi network you have previously used, this option tells iPod touch to look for another network. iPod touch will display a list of all available WiFi networks that you can choose from. Networks that require a password appear with a lock icon.

If "Ask to Join New Networks" is turned off, you must manually join a network to connect to the Internet when a previously used network is unavailable. Choose WiFi and turn "Ask to Join Networks" on or off. If you turn "Ask to Join Networks" off, you must join networks manually.

Join a WiFi network manually

Choose WiFi, wait a moment as iPod touch detects available WiFi networks in range, then choose a network. If necessary, enter a password and tap Join. Networks that require a password appear with a lock icon.

Make iPod touch forget a WiFi network

Choose WiFi and tap the arrow next to a network you've joined before. Then tap "Forget this Network" When you do this the iPod Touch doesn't join the network automatically.

Connect to a closed WiFi network or a network that isn't shown

Choose WiFi, then tap Other and enter the network name. If the network requires a password, choose Security, tap the type of security the network uses, and enter the password. You must already know the network name, password, and security type to connect to a closed network.

iPod Touch WiFi Troubleshooting Tips

If you are still having the following issues then follow the fixes below.

Issues:

  • iPod Touch shows no WiFi address (Tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to WiFi Address.
  • iPod touch appears to be connected to a WiFi network but cannot use Wi-Fi for checking email and surfing the Internet.
  • iPod Touch WiFi icon is showing as grayed out.
  • When you tap Settings > WiFi and then you see no network entries.

Fixes for iPod Touch WiFi issues:

First you need to back up your data by syncing your iPod touch to iTunes. It is very important you do this before proceeding with the fixes below.

Fix 1:
On the iPod Touch go to Settings > General > Reset and then select Reset Network Settings. Now see if the device displays the WiFi address under Settings > General > About and scrolling down to WiFi Address. If there is a WiFi address listed then you issue is resolved. Else try Fix 2 below.

Fix 2:
On the iPod Touch go to Settings > General > Reset and then select Erase All Content and Settings.  Now see if the device displays the WiFi address under Settings > General > About and scrolling down to WiFi Address.  If there is a WiFi address listed then you issue is resolved. Else try Fix 3 below.

Fix 3:
If the above fixes don't work then the only thing left is to restore the iPod touch software using iTunes which will erase all data on the device. So before restoring make sure you back up your data by syncing with iTunes.

After the restore is complete, you can resync with iTunes to load the data back to your iPod Touch. Now see if your device shows a WiFi address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to WiFi Address). If none of the above settings and fixes work ,then you might want to consider getting your iPod touch repaired by Apple.

I really enjoyed reading about how difficult you were finding setting up an ipod on a network. If you have never set up a network, you really should not have purchased an ipod touch. If you still want to set it up, get a professional to help you. All you are doing is showing your level of knowledge as that not worthy of reply!
IT will cost you, but, face it, a 5 minute setup is how long it takes, if you know what you are doing. Is this worth it?
    Only you can answer that.

if it isn't your internet, and there is a password on it - you shouldn't be on it anyway.

  • At November 18, 2009 at 6:55 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Omg. Is there a site for people who actually know what they are doing? A locked signal is locked so that if you don't know the password, you can't use it! Your iPod will automatically detect wireless signals around it. If you don't know the code to join, the person who owns it doesn't want you to and locked it. Lack of free wifi signal means you have either set up your own with router and modem or go somewhere it's free like the library to get your iPod online or to access any features that require it.
The original question was for anyone with knowledge on how to save a password to a wireless signal you are authorized to access? Is this possible?

    well said november 18th
i also need to answer to the original question,
ive had my itouch for a year now, and it used to connect automatically to my route from home, after only entering the password once. i recently had to reset to the original settings, and from then on it doesnt pick up any wireless signals around it, and i have to manually enter the details very single time, very annoying as its very long! help would be appreciated,

  • At November 23, 2009 at 1:44 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

There is a option called Ask to Join a New Network.Yours is turned Off.Just turn it back to On and it should work like before

To connect to the Internet you need to buy it and password the connection which then it will be locked from people around you to use because you paid for it.
If your lucky sombody around you may not have password protected there Internet and then you can join(steal there bandwidth) it no problem.
You can also go find a hotspot which is a place like a coffee shop or something like that to connect to the Internet for free.

    Hmm. Not sure then
Try turning wifi off then on
-try a reset again and make sure everything is updated after
You could also try something like wifi track or something like that.
I don't really know if apps like that will help you but that's something to look in to

However tried playing the multiplayer online option and it says my network isnt configured to play online games???? How can that be if I downloaded it over the same connection? Any ideas how I can get it working online?

  • At November 25, 2009 at 3:25 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

It's probably your router firewall which is preventing you to game online.
Go to your router configuration and there it may have a game mode setting and if not then you need open up a port.
If you don't know how to configure it just phone tech support.
If your router came with your Internet subscription phone them and they should be able to walk you through it.

    Dudes,

The way I have found to save the wifi password instead of entering the bloody thing over and over is go to:

Settings/wi-fi/ then you will see a option to 'ask to join networks' set it to OFF. This way, it won't keep asking you everytime.

I just tried it on my 64gb touch with 3.1.2 firmware.

    Fixed.

If you got your router from your ISP call them and they should be able to reset/tell you your password.

The passwords you want are your neighbours password protected Internet connection and it's passworded because they bought the service and they don't like people stealing there bandwidth.

Wifi is basically the method of connecting to an Internet source without using a Wire like a Bluetooth connection.

Find a free Internet connection called hotspots. They are usually coffe shops and libraries

I have had a home wireless network for quite some time now and have many computing devices attached to it; kids school laptops, Wii's, DS's, etc. I found the iPod terminolgy for wireless setup to be non-intuitive and uncommon to most commonplace computing. I could not get my daughters iPod Touch to prompt for the Security type from the automatic list of network devices no matter what I did.

I was able to get it to work by:
1 - going to "Other...", typing the network "Name" in manually (be careful to make sure it is exact, case, numbers and all),
2 - select the "Security" type WEP or WPA (mine is WEP becuase this is common to Nintendo and public school Windows access setups), and then
3 - enter one of your WEP keys into the iPod field for "Password".

I am using a DLink wireless router behind 2 additional layers of firewall protection with Network Magic. Network Magic immediately recognized that the iPod device requested access with the proper security settings but had flagged it aa a potential intruder. I had to then go tell Network Magic the device was not an intruder and to manually provide the router manager with device identification settings (ie device name) because the iPod did not send it over.

The iPod then placed a check mark beside the original network list entry to show that it was connected. You can then check details about whether the router has completely enabled the iPod by navagating through the little > to the far right. You should see numbers for IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router and DNS. This tells you you are fully recognized by your wireless network typically all the way out to the internet.

    I hope this helps.

Sooo frustrating - I've been getting the same "... invalid argument" response for two days now and I don't know why! I've tried the recommendations as posted by the last individual to no avail. Is this problem related to my router, firewall or just my ridiculously-insufficient knowledge of all 21st century technology?
    PLEASE, HELP!?!

  • At December 28, 2009 at 6:58 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Wireless router's have a security layer that can protect it by only allowing certain Mac address's to access it. Your Mac address can be found in the general setting button on the Itouch. Once you have that # you need to access the wireless router on the network your attemptong to access. This can be done by using a computer that is already linked to the system. In other words if the internet is working your hooked. Then type the following 192.168.0.1 generally that is the default ip address for the router. An access screen should appear. You will need that info to continue. Generally the default code if one is'nt set is admin (username) then no password. Sometimes the password will be admin again. Once inside the router config, go to the wireless tab. It's diffrent on various models. there should be a tab in that setting to add or block Mac address's. If the setting to block is turned on, you will need to add your Mac address to the list there. use the format shown to enter the address. Generally it is 12:24:ad: so on and so forth depending on what Mac address you have. Then save the settings and that should do it.

Am I just not understanding some of these questions?
First off passwords are just that passwords just like your pin number to your bank card.
Internet is not free unless you find a Hot spot so most people password protect there Internet connection and some just forget or just don't know how.
Your iPod finds in a limited radius all the Internet connection, password protected or not.
I have an iPod touch and in my opinion it's just a fun little gadget but if you want to check email and surf the net anywhere anytime use a 3g phone or something like that until it gets more advanced

If you don't know your password to connect to the Internet then you don't have one and it's at default so anyone close enough can connect to it.
The arcs people are talking about is the signal strength of the Internet connection to you. Three arcs - high, medium, and low.
On the connection list on your iPod if you set up security on your connection then the name you used in the set up should show up.
Have you guys been scrolling farther down the list because you might be only looking at half the list and yours is close to the bottom.
If you haven't set yours up with a security then in the list the name might be default or the name of your router make.

Your iPod has a wifi Internet connection and no LAN line connections so if you don't have a wireless router then your SOL .
When you connect to your computer through the USB you can not get Internet connection you can just file transfer.

If you don't know your own security password and your 100percent sure that is your Internet connection then first go ask the person who set up your Internet why didn't you give me the name and password when you set it up.
Second- read the instructions that came with your wireless router on how to set it up security.
Third- phone your Internet provider for help.
Fourth- if you can't connect it could be a firewall issue

WHO EVER POSTED THE MESSAGE BELOW THANKS SOOOOOOOO MUCH- HAVE SPENT THE LAST 3 HOURS LOOKING AT AT HTE SUGGESTIONS TO NO AVAIL- EASY WHEN OYU KNOW HOW.....TRY IT IT REALLY WORKED FOR ME..

FYI to anyone with Charter Communications as their host and you're trying to set up your email on your new iPod Touch. It can be done although it can also be difficult. Charter is evidently not the iPod's friend. I followed the iPod Touch instructions to the letter but no luck. Then took it to Apple store and rep there could not get the set up to work either. Went home and tried it again and this time just let it sit there for ten minutes while it tried to hook up. It finally worked. The only thing I think I did wrong ealier at home and at the Apple store was that I just didn't wait long enough!

    Hi, a few questions.
1: What is the password and where can you find it?
2: What does "Invalid Argument" mean? It keeps showing up with a message saying "Unable to join"
3: And what are all the extra fields in the wi-fi connections settings where there's the IP address and stuff?

get the router IP address from the stick on the back or underside of the router.
enter IP address in http search bar.
    enter username = admin
    enter password = admin
this will display all the router settings.
somewhere here there will be a network key
use this key as your wifi password

any errors relating to safari not connecting? turn off the router for 30 seconds with the ipod switched on. when you switch router back on, the ipod will pick the new IP address and router settings.

    then everything will be fine.

    Strange Wi-Fi capability!
I have an Ipod Touch and Iphone come from same OS version 3.1.2. And I have a wireless router at home. Initially, I set wireless router to broadcast SSID where both Iphone and Ipod able to identify the access point. But since I dont want to just let somebody sniffing my access point, I disabled the broadcast of SSID. Unfortunately Ipod can no longer detect the access point while Iphone can still attach to it. Im using D-Link DIR-300 with WPA/WPA2 security mode, TKIP and PSK encryption/authentication. Im thinking this is a bug in my Ipod. Pls help!!

If you do not know the password for a Wifi connection then either you do not own the wifi or your a complete retard. How hard is it to go into your router and get the wep key...NOT HARD. And if you can't connect because you have wpa security just change it to wep. Simple as that.

For "most" routers all you have to do is go on a computer and in the browser type 192.168.2.1 Or 192.168.1.1 to access your router so you can find your wep key etc etc.

If you don't have a router stop trying to steal wifi from someone else if you bought a ipod touch then you should have enough money to buy a 30 buck wireless router.

I can't believe the amount of useless info posted here, "your config is in your settings"? How lame. Apple lists the manual's connection to wifi steps but offers no ACTUAL troubleshoot steps or options. For example, there is no image diagram correlating the connection between what Apple labels as settings names and what your wifi/modem/router calls them. This is a disservice to it's customers however it does not stop them from taking your money to their bank. As usual, the manufacturer decides that it is the responsibility of the consumer to get their piece of Cra_p operational.

Mine suddenly asks for a password where no password exists. This an ipod hardware fault not a network issue.

I can't tell you how many forums are filled with misinformation and confusing verbiage designed to make the contributor feel they've been most helpful

I keep getting the same BS "Safari can not open this page cause you are not connected to the internet' The final suggestion is to take it back to Apple for repairs. Apple can suck me!!! Last Ipod I had, the home button stopped working. I took it down to Apple and my warranty expired 2 weeks before the problem occurred. They gave me a quote on how much it would cost to fix it, but for the price, I was better off getting a new one. Well here it is only 6 months later and problems with the new much more expensive Ipod. Im sick of the BS and the run around Apple gives you when theres an issue. On a scale of 1-10, I rate these I-Trash 3.

I tried everything short of wiping everything off it and starting over. I also tried all the (reasonable-sounding) suggestions I read here. What finally worked was to go to settings>wifi then choose my home's wifi by name, then choose "forget network". The next time I tried to connect it asked for the password, I typed it in and it connected. I didn't see this tip so thought I would add it in hopes it helps someone else.

I've generally connected well to every WiFi hotspot network with my new iPod Touch 4G -- EXCEPT my home network!! Usually when I'm stuck I log onto our (Netgear "G") router from one of our laptops, and change the channel. I usually use 1, 6, or 11, because I've heard they are non-overlapping.

Changing the channel always lets the iPod connect immediately. I'm guessing that the problem is interference with one of our neighbours using the same (or an adjacent) channel -- but just guessing.

Just like a car, if you took driver's ed or read the manufacturers user manual in the glove box, you can ask questions that can help you. Apple provides a .pdf manual for the iPod that you can download to a computer or get from the app store onto your iPad. It provides clear instructions on how to access wireless network(s). To have access to a closed or hidden network, you need permission first from who manages the network. They will supply you with SSID and password, and type of security to select. Open networks like at schools, libraries and restaurants like Panera Bread or Burger King or bookstores, just ask them for instructions. An iPad is capable of connecting to and storing access choices for several locations. Be very careful at work, as you can be monitored or restricted as to what you can do even on open systems. If you installed your own router it came with a manual or info on a CD. Hopefully you documented what you did to install it. If you purchased or lease a wireless connection such as with ATT or Verizon they should be able to help. Remember that wifi uses a lot of battery power, and your iPod can't be run down if you expect it to work. None of the questions seen here are stupid. Some ill prepared, and some really seem to want to know how to get into someone else's system, and as we and others said not such a good idea. Cracking into someone else's system might gain you access, and it might be destructive to your own device.

I looked in my pokett the other day and noticed that my ipod had selected a secure network, it had the password page up. I didn't type in anything, or attempted a login. I didn't have the codes or permission to access it so I canceled it. I left my wifi on and almost butt-dialed into someones network. I know that people can moniter who's on thier network. Could they have tracked me? I don't want them to think I'm a hacker.

For reliable internet access use a computer and don't rely on an expensive mp3 player.
