How to restore when wrong passcode disables your iPod Touch or iPhone

Wednesday, January 7, 2009  |  162 comments
As you know iPhone and iPod touch allow you to set a passcode to be entered when powered on or when the wake button is pressed. And when you enter the wrong passcode you'll see a screen that says "Wrong Passcode, try again." If you enter the wrong passcode too many times, you'll see a message that says "iPod is disabled" and to try again late. The screen on the iPhone will read as "iPhone is disabled."

If you repeatedly enter the wrong passcode, iPhone or iPod touch will be disabled for longer intervals, before you can try again. After too many unsuccessful attempts, you won't be able to try again until you connect to the computer you normally sync with. Show me more...

Note that starting with iPhone 2.1 software, there is a setting to cause the device to erase itself after 10 consecutive incorrect password attempts. This setting is off by default. It can be turned on by tapping Settings > General > Passcode Lock after you enter a correct passcode.

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device on the computer that was used to originally sync the iPhone or iPod touch so that you can reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).

If you restore on a different computer that was never synced to the iPhone or iPod touch, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode but your data will not be present.

Restoring your iPhone or iPod touch

Restoring your device will erase all data from your iPhone or iPod touch, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPhone or iPod touch settings are restored to their factory condition.

Whenever you restore your iPhone or iPod touch, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring in order to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device that you haven't finished watching, restoring using iTunes will delete the movie rental and will not be recoverable.

Use the following steps to restore your iPhone or iPod touch:
  1. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
  2. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to your computer.
  3. Select your iPhone or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  4. Select the Summary tab.
  5. Select the Restore option.
  6. When prompted to back up your iPhone or iPod touch's settings before restoring, select the Back Up option. If have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
  7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (As long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your phone).
  8. Once the restore process has completed the iPhone or iPod touch restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up. NOTE:For the iPhone only, after a restore, the iPhone displays the "Connect to Activate" screen. During this period you must continue to keep your device connected to complete activation and make sure you are connected to the internet.
  9. The final step is to restore your iPhone or iPod touch from a previous backup. So on the setup screen select the back up you want for your iPhone or iPod touch and select the Continue button in order to complete your device's restoration.

can anyone help me please....i recently recovered my ipod touch...it was stolen but i was luck enough to get it back....the problem i have now with it is that it is locked. whoever stole it must have put a different password and now it says the it is disabled. when i plug it in into my laptop i get the following message: "iPod cannot connect to iTunes because it has a passcode..." i tried to restore it but not even that worked....then i called apple and the representative told me that i would need to send it in and there would be a charge since it is not covered anymore. i would like try to fix it myself before i send it in and spend additional money on it. if anyone can help me please let me know....thank you

When I restore it I am able to get in it with no problem but when I download what I had backed up the passcode comes back on. When I restore it and start over as a new phone it has none of my contacts or calendar info which I desperately must keep. How do I restore, download the info that was backed up with out the passcode that I don't know coming back into play? Does anyone know?

ahhh feb 4th! youre a lifesaver!

and i know all you people must be so frustrated who say its not working. the trick is NOT to turn the ipod back on.

when youre going to plug in the cable make sure it is off. and DO NOT turn back on. just hold down the bottom button while the ipod is still off and plug in. there will be a pop up box that will ask you if you want to restore your ipod.

and btw make sure itunes is open too.

  • At February 1, 2010 at 7:32 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

well smarty pants people... these are all the same ideas and it doesn't work, i placed my ipod in recovery mode and selected restore on itunes, however it starts to restore the ipod, then a message pops up and says that it cannot restore through itunes until the passcode is entered into ipod, which obviously can't be done in recovery mode, or while it is disabled for like 40 years. The apple site says it should work on any computer, as the computer I last synced it with crashed. At this point I would love it if I could just wipe it clean, I wouldn't even care if I had to buy all my songs/videos over as long as I could use it. I talked with the retail store and they said it would cost $150 for them to fix it... at that price I might as well go buy a new one. Has anyone ever had the above trick not work to restore back to factory settings and erase the damn passcode... I haven't been able to use my ipod in a few months.

    Hey there May 5th...
    1. Turn off iPod
    2. Ensure you have the latest version of iTunes up and running
    3. Disconnect cord from iPod (leave the other end connected to the computer)
    4. Reconnect the cable while holding the bottom power button
    5. Once you have done this, you will see the option to restore your iPod on iTunes
    6. DONE!

***Sometimes seeing it in steps is easier than reading it in a paragraph*** Thanks Feb 4th

hey guys. here i am again i was the one asking for help a few days ago im may 5 7:41 am. and i had just fixed my iPod touch. i found a simple way to completely erase your passcode without erasing any of your photos, music, or videos.you guys mite know this technique already but i just wanna share it if ever any one out there doesnt know it yet. what i did was i first connected my iPod to iTunes then when it was open i simply right clicked the little ipod icon on the side under "devices" then i clicked the second to the last choice saying "restore from backup" after clicking that a small window will appear (if you call it a window) saying "choose backup to restore this will restore only the calendar, settings, and contacts, not the iPod firmware." click restore and in a few minutes your iPod should restart automatically and come out in the home view.
    NOTE:
1.this is should be done preferably to the computer you last synced on to for you to save all of the music, videos, photos you have on your iPod.
    2. i dont know if this makes a difference or anything cause when i did it with mine it wasnt in disabled mode.

    hope i helped a bit.
oh and thanks for all those who tried to help me!! i needed it!:)

Just so you know you can always phone apple for support. Most of he support from apple is free. If your still within the first 90 days from purchase or if you have AppleCare protection then you can pretty much phone in as many times as you want and get walked through fixing your issue. I think the option to call in for help s great because everyone you speak with is specially trained for that device. You can also go to www.apple.com/support for great FREE support articles available 24-7.The "force recovery" mode which is the mode you put you device into ( like your iPhone or iPod) when you can't get itunes to recogniZe your device. Holding the home button down while connecting the USB cable into the computer. Just an FYI
the computer while having iTunes open on the computer. Then you get the connect
to iTunes graphic on the device and the option o restore your device n iTunes on your computer.

my daughter disabled her ipod by changing the password then re-entering it the wrong way too many times. We have restored the device. Is there a way to put the songs and aps she has downloaded and paid for already back on her ipod? As far as I know she has not backed any of the files up on another computer. We have a wireless connetion and she just downloads from itunes that way!! Help! She has A LOT of $$$ invested in it. Just doesn't seem fair to lose it all because it got locked :(

ANYONE WHO CAN FIX THIS I WILL WIRE $30 THROUGH PAYPAL SWEAR ON MY LIFE! Ok, so If your going to reply to my comment just call me "Abbey"
My father found an iphone 3gs, there was no sim, (no way of contacting owner) but there is a passcode. So in short, he gave it to me, but I can't figure out how to get past the stupid passcode.
I can't restore, it tells me the network has timed out, and I'm so utterly lost. I'm not very technological so if anyone can give me the instructions that are easy for me to follow, I will pay them the $30. You have my word, I want to use this iphone, and I will pay you the thirty dollars, and probably more because I will be so estatic. Please reply!

Another way to do it is start to jailbreak with greenpoision and once you get to the step to jail break don't start jail break your iTunes will recognize the iPod and ask if you want to restore this will only work if your iPod IS OFF or in DFU mode it takes a while to restore but it works

For anyone having an issue getting your ipod into recovery mode (feb 4th post), I finally figured out an alternative way. Download RecBoot, it's a software that forces your idevice into recovery mode. No need to hold any buttons, itunes will recognize right away your device in recovery mode and you can restore it from there. I hope this helps!!

I tried putting it into recovery mode but it doesn't seem to be working. It keep pooping up with a red battery and telling me to connect it to the power outlet (Laptop). HELP PLEASE! Ok guys so the only problem with recovering is that you will lose ALL your FILES SO IF YOU DONT HAVE THEM BACKED UP I recommend not to do this, Hold down the HOME and POWER buttons at the same time until the screen goes black. Then, let go ONLY the POWER button and then on your screen it will pop up a message saying that you have prompted to restore your iPod/iPhone to its original settings.

  • At January 12, 2012 at 6:29 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    at least try DFU mode
    hold power for 2 seconds
then start holding the home button without letting go of the power button for 10 secconds
then let go of the power button only and itunes should detect it as an ipod that needs to be restored.
make sure the device is plugged in while you do this

if it doesnt work, your home/power button is broken. if the home button is

hold it down to the side instead of middle

1.hold the top button until you see a power off slide.
    2. Slide it and the power will turn off.
    3. hold the bottom button and connect your iPod to the computer.
    4. Go to iTunes and it gives you the option to restore your iPod, restore it and you're done.

    Hope this helps.

plug your connector cord into your computer, and open itunes, DO NOT PLUG IN IPOD/PHONE, turn off your device, hold down the home button, keep holding the home button while you plug the cord into it DO NOT LET GO, turn it on, and keep holding the power button until it comes up with a screen saying connected to itunes, then, restore your ipod works almost everytime :)

i know all you people must be so frustrated who say its not working. the trick is NOT to turn the ipod back on.

when youre going to plug in the cable make sure it is off. and DO NOT turn back on. just hold down the bottom button while the ipod is still off and plug in. there will be a pop up box that will ask you if you want to restore your ipod.

and btw make sure itunes is open too.
